2001

Download the 2001 mix here.

Not much to say on this one. This is undoubtedly the worst year of the decade so far for music (among other things), though I managed to cobble together a pretty decent mix. I stuck "The Takeover" and "Ether" on here to represent the most talked about hip hop feud ever, and there are some great songs, to be sure. "Romeo" has had enormous influence in the ensuing years, and "Digital Love" is my jam. The rock revival at the end of the year redeemed it somewhat, with the Strokes and the White Stripes in particular, though both groups didn't truly take hold until the next year. You'll also see I used the Bjork single "Our Hands" rather than anything off of Vespertine. I love Vespertine, but I think " Our Hands" stands alone much better than "Pagan Poetry."

"New Slang" presented a difficult decision, since the song was so big in 2004 because of Garden State ("here, this is "New Slang," by the Shins, off of their record "Oh, Inverted World" available wherever records are sold"). I decided to put it in 2001 because the song made a slight splash in the indie world then, and also because I've kind of decided not to include songs because they hit big on soundtracks. For the most part, I've stuck those songs in their original years. I'm not really sure why.

This is also the first time that I have edited a track, due to the inclusion of a skit before or after the song. "The Life" originally had a skit that led into the next song, but I cut it off for your listening pleasure. Enjoy, and don't be afraid to post suggestions below.

1. Romeo - Basement Jaxx - 3:36
2. Let Me Blow Ya Mind Ft. Gwen Stefani - Eve - 3:49
3. Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz - 5:42
4. Hash Pipe - Weezer - 3:07
5. Last Night - The Strokes - 3:17
6. Agenda Suicide - The Faint - 3:58
7. Purple Pills - D12 - 5:06
8. Can't Get You Out Of My Head - Kylie Minogue - 3:49
9. Digital Love - Daft Punk - 4:58
10. Fallin' - Alicia Keys - 3:30
11. The Takeover - Jay-Z - 5:13
12. Ether - NaS - 4:37
13. Fell In Love With A Girl - The White Stripes - 1:50
14. Witness (One Hope) - Roots Manuva - 4:15
15. The Life (edit) - Mystic - 3:32
16. Destiny - Zero 7 - 5:37
17. Our Hands - Bjork - 4:18
18. New Slang - The Shins - 3:51
19. Pyramid Song - Radiohead - 4:48

This entire blog is such a great and original thought that I have to say I'm pissed I didn't think of it first. I hate/love you, bza.

Just out of curiosity, what is your policy on live tracks?

I've got a few down the line. I wouldn't replace a song with the live version simply because it is better, but if it got enough attention on its own, I would consider it. Why? Do you have a specific track in mind?

Just curious. I would do the same thing. Stick to album tracks unless the live version was notably different and had a seperate impact.

I know that Strokes and White Stripes and Andrew WK (why did you take that off? party til you puke, dude) technically debuted in 2001, but for some reason I feel like they really entered pop culture in 02. I know that would fuck your mixes up somethin awful, but what are your thoughts on that? I realize that you being in NY at the time probably made it so that stuff broke earlier for you, but I was in sunny Palo Alto, where no one said I looked like the dude from the strokes until spring of 2002. I also took a lot of drugs that year and probably don't remember timeframes all that well.

I guess you already talked about this in the write up but I'm gonna push it. 02 is when it blowed up.

Did you consider Maxwell's "Lifetime?" I recall that being something of a post-9/11 anthem...maybe it was bigger in '02.

Dearest Matteo - could you re up 2001? I thought I had downloaded it, but alas - no.

I love your mixes like I love your woman.

2 songs I haven't seen on your lists and have achieved iconic status, at least in television are Hey Mama - Black Eyed Peas and Vertigo - U2. As part of the ipod revolution shouldn't they be important when we're talking about downloading music?

Also - if there's no Elliot Smith when we get to the 90s - specifically Between the Bars - as featured in a film that has bonded Morse and I for life.

Ok - I'm done - I miss you, Matteo. It's true.

All the mixes so far will be reposted tomoroow or the next day.

Claire, I hate both of those songs, but it doesn't mean I don't love your suggestions. Elliot Smith will be reexamined, but I'm not promising anything.

We shall reunite soon enough, Clarito.

I'd also like to apologize for my apparent lack of grammar qualifications - specifically when completing sentences. There should have been a well thought out threat following the Elliot Smith comment, but alas, I was in the middle of taking notes for Civil Procedure.

My only real comment about the whole "idea" of these awesome mixes is that the emphasis placed on the nouveau-hipster music (aka all the bands in the past 3 years beginning with the word "The") seems a little overblown.

It may just be my personal preference, but when examining "the rules" of this project, it seems like very few if any of the songs by The Hives, The Vines, The White Stripes, etc. should qualify.

I won't pretend that I'm hip to the tunes that all "the kids" are listening to these days, but to use your own hated music against you, I think if The Hives had put out "Vertigo" it would be on the mix, but if U2 puts out "Hate to Say I Told You So" it would be dismissed.

I have been really pleased with the hip hop selections, but that may be because I get all of my "street cred" from you and Morse anyway.

I'm also going to out myself by reiterating that I truly dislike The Flaming Lips - "Do You Realize" specifically.

I understand if I'm now cut out of the will.

This brings up some good points, sorry if I seem like I am disagreeing with all of them.

First of all, I would hardly call the White Stripes or the Hives hipster music, but they are certainly

1. Important enough in rock history to merit inclusion.
2. Awesome enough to put out some really excellent songs.
3. Dear to my heart.

The "The" bands may seem like a trend, but The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Libertines, and The Hives all made a significant splash in the early part of the decade, and the latter two seem to have really cemented their place in the mainstream of rock (The White Stripes sold out four shows at a huge theater here just last summer).

I could hardly think of two more different bands than U2 and the Hives, so I couldn't imagine them putting out each other's songs. But I will agree that U2's record from last year was a mainstream success, and "Vertigo's" play on the ipod commercials made it timely. However, I don't like that song - at all. And if you look at number one on the rule list, you will find quality, the most important and most subjective of all qualifiers, at the top.

I also wonder if the hives had put out "Vertigo" if you would still like it, becuase I think the majority of U2's success with their album can be attributed to an already established fan base. Certainly had an unknown band created "Vertigo," it would be just another rock song in which someone counts poorly in a different language. Why would I put "Vertigo" and not "Jerk It Out," by the Ceasars? It's a far better song, and it was played on even more iPod commercials than U2.

So you can see the complications that arise when you get into liking or not liking music. You can also feel free to call me a hipster when I put M.I.A. or LCD Soundsystem on a mix, but I truly believe that this is the music that matters right now, though I would be very open to any specific suggestions for addition. I'm not playing hipster or anti-hipster, I am simply looking at the music that came out in a year and picking my favorite singles from a group of relevant and important music. You will inevitably omit popular songs and trendy songs alike by the very nature of the process.

Sorry I included Flaming Lips and not U2. But feel free to replace any song that disappoints you with a song of greater personal enjoyment. You could even put an Aerosmith song on a mix if you wanted to. Just don't point it at me.

Did this all make sense?

I know dearest, I am probably the most mainstream person frequenting your blog, and I'm cool with that.

I'm just glad I have you to introduce me to music that I would otherwise never hear.

Also, just to confuse my tastes even further, I want to let you know that I love that LCD Soundsystem song. I also wish that Pharrell Williams would just be in my life so that I could absorb his genius.

I'm not a huge U2 fan, I was just trying to use a band I know you don't love, but I do love YOU and this project.

In the words of Morse (and Casey Affleck) you are wicked smaaaaart.
